1. Missing You

by Loren Halvorson
An old poem from my college years - the music was an accident.

Haven't seen you in a while
Someone's built a wall of miles
And it falls between us • Oh, it falls between us
Yes the faces they've all changed
And the names are not the same
And together doesn't mean what it used to

But understand that the words "how I miss you"
Aren't strong enough to hint at what I feel
I miss your smile, I miss your touch, miss everything about you girl
You're everywhere I go, you're everything I do

Do you remember how it was
When we were close enough to touch
And together really meant we were together?
Well even though you're far away
I still see you every day
I'm surrounded by the memory of your love

But understand that the words "how I love you"
Aren't strong enough to hint at what I feel
I love your smile, I love your touch, love everything about you girl.
You're everywhere I go, you're everything I do
You're everywhere I go, and everything I do

2. Surreal

by Peter Bloedel & The Divers
How many surrealists does it take to... ah, forget it.

I closed the door but I couldn't lock it
Closed the door but he couldn't lock it
I got a fish in my back pocket
Her-nonny-hey-o-way
He speaks German fluently
Sprechen Sie deutsch le excellente
His dad's a monk, his Mom's a tree

CHORUS:
Objects in my mirror
Seem a distance far away, but actually they're near
And then they disappear
In shades of blue and red and yellow
Everything is so surreal

Beneath my clothes I'm all buck necked
Beneath his clothes he's all buck necked
Dead-headed Ed edited it with Beckett
A guy named Ed edited it
Moved my fridge with Salvador's Dali
Moved his fridge with Salvador's Dali
And Boutros Boutros Boutros-Ghali

[CHORUS]

I wrote this song and then it set sail
He wrote this song and now it's for sale
To race across Jean Cocteau's cocktail
Her-nonny-hey-o-way
Siggy Freud would probably mock it
Siggy Freud would probably mock it
But there ain't no fish in his back pocket

[CHORUS]

OK, backwards now!
Surreal so is thing
Every yellow and red and blue of shades in appear
Dis they then and near they're
Actually when away far distance
A seem mirror my in objects

3. If I Were A Dog

by Jason Gray
A love song of pathetic proportions.

If I were a dog
I could stare at your beauty for extended periods of time
And you'd never even notice
Nor would you probably care
'Cuz dogs are prone to stare

If I were a dog
I could walk with you down the city street without raising a suspicion
Perhaps you'd pity me
When I followed you home
You'd let me in and give me a milkbone

CHORUS:
I don't know if we could make it work
But I'm eager to give it a try
I'm open to the possibility
That the life of a dog could be the life for me

If I were a dog
I'd have an excuse for all this drooling every time
You walk into the room
'Cuz that's just what we do
Few ever wonder why
Ah, but if you only knew

If I were a dog
I would not hesitate to sit at your feet and beg for your affection
I'd use my big brown eyes
To get into your heart
Maybe we could go for walkies in the park

[CHORUS]

But it would probably never work in the end
You'd get sick and tired of me biting all your boyfriends
And I'd always want to sleep on the bed
Ooooo

4. Orphan Girl

by Gillian Welch, Arranged by The Divers
© 1994 Irving Music, Inc. BMI
Eric's not really an orphan.

I am an orphan on God's highway
And I'll share my troubles if you'll go my way
I have no mother, no father
No sister, and no brother
'Cuz I am an orphan girl

I have had friendships pure and golden
But ties of kinship, I have not known them
I know no mother, no father
No sister, and no brother
'Cuz I am an orphan girl

And when he calls me I will be able
To meet my family at God's table
I'll meet my mother, my father
My sister, and my brother
No more an orphan girl

So blessed Savior make me willing
Walk beside me 'til I'm with them
Be my mother, my father
My sister, and my brother
'Cuz I am an orphan girl

5. Mrs. Midas

by Peter Bloedel
After writing this song, Pete has actually become a novice gardener - something he never thought would happen in a million years. Does life imitate art or does Pete imitate an artist?

Around the corner and down the block
My friends and I would go see Mrs. Midas
Summer mornings under sunny skies
We'd race our bikes to Mrs. Midas'

An old woman with a heart of gold
And a plot of land with a garden on it
A vegetation wonderland
If God made a plant Mrs. Midas could grow it

CHORUS:
Swiss chard, bell peppers, radishes, and cucumbers
Carrots and peas
She would turn over God's good earth
And she could feel His peace
Violets, geraniums, zinnias, snap dragons
She'd plant and preen
Periwinkle, hollyhocks, roses and forget-me-nots
Everything she touched turned green

She'd give us tomatoes we could bite like apples
A mouth full of sun and rain and loving care
We'd play hide and seek in the sweet corn rows
Or have a rhubarb sword fight and eat our weapons there

She'd make us bouquets that we could give our mothers
Flowers fresh enough to tempt a honey bee
And send us off with veggies we could bring back home
Each one tasting like she had a recipe

[CHORUS]

Mrs. Midas had an aging soul
And it got called back to her creator
The old woman and her plants are gone
But the grass is greener where they laid her

The gray gardener left her mark
She reached in and she touched my heart
and planted seeds within me that will keep on growing
gardening and kindness are related arts

[CHORUS]

6. Pen to the Paper

by Jason Gray
(The Precarious Act of Songwriting)

I put my pen to the paper
And try to put my words into other people's mouths
I put my hand to the instrument
And then I flesh out a tune
That should make men of war cry
And the young maidens swoon
Because the power of a song is mighty indeed

So I put my pen to the paper
And try to put my heart into other people's words
I gather note upon note
And then I wrap words ‘round emotion
I try to sing of truest love
And deepest devotion
Because everyone I know loves a good song

Should I sing from the heart
Should I sing from the mind
Should I marry the two and sing in double time
Should I use metaphor or simile
Should I sing about you
Or just sing about me?
La la la...

So I put my pen to the paper
In attempts to give voice to the movement of my heart
I chuck a stone down the well of my soul
And I try to disturb deeper waters
Though all poets are thieves
And every minstrel a marauder
Compelled and obsessed I follow the muse once more

Should I sing from the heart
Should I sing from the mind
Should I marry the two and sing in double time
Should I use simile or metaphor
Should I sing about what all of this singing is for?
La la la...

7. Fly Away

by Peter Bloedel
Eric doesn't really know how to fly.

I know it's far but I ain't drivin'
Doesn't matter when you're not on the ground
Might be a million miles away
Doesn't matter when you're not on the ground
No tellin' just when I'm arrivin'
Doesn't matter when you're not on the ground
'Cuz I'm gonna ride the wind today
Doesn't matter when you're not on the ground

CHORUS:
I'll fly away
I'll fly away, yeah
I'll fly away
I'll fly away, yeah

My exit's gonna be the sky light
Doesn't matter when you're not on the ground
No traffic lights to slow me down
Doesn't matter when you're not on the ground
If I jump with all of my might
Careful not to let your face hit the ground
I'll leave my troubles on the ground
That's cool 'cuz they're all on the ground

[CHORUS]

My friends will wonder where I've gone to
Doesn't matter when you're not on the ground
'Cuz they never look above their heads
They look down 'cuz they're stuck on the ground
In the sky there's nothing to prove
Doesn't matter when you're not on the ground
And this cloud could make a perfect bed
Pretty peaceful when you're not on the ground

[CHORUS]

8. You Butter My Bread

by Peter Bloedel
The way to a man's heart is through his fat cells.

I wake up in the mornin' to an empty bed
Can't even open my eyes, it's like they're made of lead
I got a leg cramp, back ache, and that ain't all
Feels like my head got in a fight with a bowling ball
With one eye open, through a cloudy film
I barely see the clock as it turns 10 a.m.
I slither out of bed clinging to the wall
And catch a heavenly scent floating down the hall

CHORUS:
Aroma from the kitchen knock me offa my feet
Throw my heart into a faster beat beat beat
I got taste-buds jumpin' inside of my head
Baby you butter my - You butter my bread

Down in the kitchen in my baby's skillet
Is sizzlin' bacon with the oink still in it
She got fried eggs drippin' good with butter and oil
Food that make an ordinary man feel royal
Buckwheat flap-jacks hot off the griddle
Jams, jellies, homemade bread, butter on the table
There's muffins and biscuits bakin' in the oven
She's cookin' up a breakfast recipe for lovin'

[CHORUS]

She set me down and we say grace
Then I begin to stuff my thankful face
Oh honey you give me what I've been needin'
I got a zillion fat cells and they need feedin'
I'm hungry just like a thoroughbred horse is
I eat that breakfast in thirteen courses
And just when I think that I'm through it all
She holler "Last call for cholesterol"

I finish that breakfast in just three hours
Stackin' plates and pans in little towers
My tummy is sunny and my skies are blue
So I want to do somethin' nice for you
I got pure maple syrup drippin' off of my lips
I pull you closer with my greasy fingertips
You get a big bear hug and then I flood you with kisses
But you say "None of that until you finish all the dishes!"

[CHORUS]

9. We Are Not What We Own

by Loren Halvorson & Jason Gray
Written after driving through St. Peter, MN following the March 29, 1998 tornado. Jason helped with the finishing touches.

They opened the road
That cuts through the town
And I drove slowly by
And the guard waved me on

Now I'm not from this town
But I live very near
And when I saw the destruction
My eyes started to tear

I asked a young woman
How she could smile with no home
She said, there's no need for weeping
For we are not what we own

CHORUS:
We are not what we own
We are not what we own
We can replace wood and stone
We are not what we own

It was an old and proud city
And the trees towered high
But they're almost all gone now
They've been replaced by the sky

The people were out
The husbands and wives
Though some lost their homes
Most escaped with their lives (saying)

[CHORUS]

The sky huffed and puffed
And it blew our houses down
But in the rubble of a city
A community was found

[CHORUS]

10. Hush-a-bye Blush-a-bye

by Peter Bloedel
After having children, one of the coolest things is to watch them while they sleep - you can actually see them dreaming. This lullaby is an outsider's guess as to what such a dream might be like.

Hush-a-bye, blush-a-bye sweet little one
The sun says good night to the sky
The stars mark the night
As pinholes of light
And I am right here by your side

My sniffly, whimpery, wallo-wee woo
It's late and it's your time to dream
The moon's full of shine
And he throws you a line
You can climb up his moon beam

You climb past the trees in your new pajamees
'Cuz there's a keen view from that height
There's a cat on the roof
Who is missing a tooth
He's singing while flying a kite

Na na na...

You climb further up and meet a sky diving pup
With a parachute made out of silk
A night flying cow
Winks and takes a big bow
And gives you a warm glass of milk

A family of lobsters dressed up like mobsters
Fly past you in their new balloon
Some birds get the word
That you're traveling upward
And sing you a magical tune

Na na na...

Up in the sky to the clouds you must climb
Where elves throw a party for you
But there's a troll in the stew
With a didgeridoo
And a chocolate moose in the fondue

Just down the alley a bowling pin family
Scrambles to play some dodge ball
They ask you to play
And you wish you could stay
But it's time to get home after all

Some sheep knit a sweater that fits you like feathers
So you can fly free on your own
Your friends wave bye-bye
As you take to the sky
And you glide on the wind to your home

Ahhh...

The sun lights the sky and you open your eyes
You wake up - You're back from your dream
And I wake up too
'Cuz there's fun stuff to do
Another day for you and me

Na na na...

11. The Man In The Middle

by T. H. Campbell, Arranged by The Divers
Published by Paul Craft Music (copyright control)
A song we learned from Pete's sister Sara. A favorite of ours for years.

CHORUS:
Three men on a mountain
Up on Calvary
And the Man in the middle was Jesus
He died for you and me

Now the man on the left was a sinner
Tied to the cross he bled
He could have been forgiven
But he mocked the Lord instead

"You say You are the Son of God
And they nailed You to a tree
Come down come down and save us
if God Your Father be"

[CHORUS]

Now the man on the right was a sinner too
Sorry for his sins
And he begged the Lord's forgiveness
And Jesus said to him

"Fear not, fear not this earthly death
Before this day is o'er
You'll be with Me in Paradise
On Heaven's golden shore"

[CHORUS]

12. The Maker

by Peter Bloedel
...Let the sea resound, and all that is in it; let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them.
Then all of the trees of the forest will sing for joy... Psalms 96

Carry this song to the deep ocean
Where the waves crash on the land
Stand at the edge of the rocky shore
And sing it as loud as you can

Rise up you waters, wondrous creation
Sing the song with me
Your wind and your rain
Crash out the tune
A grand orchestration to The Maker

Carry this song to the high mountain
Emerging from the trees
Sound echoes down and is carried around
Spiraling on the breeze

Rise up you lands, wondrous creation
Sing the song with me
Majestic terrain
Echo the tune
A grand orchestration to The Maker

Carry this song in your heart young man
A place to let it grow
Share it with all who hear your voice
And sing it with all of your soul

Rise up you people, wondrous creation
Sing the song with me
You women and men
Lift up your voices
A grand orchestration to The Maker
